GM bidding on Chrysler

CHICAGO -- General Motors Corp. has a non-cash bid on the table to buy the struggling U.S. division of DaimlerChrysler AG and is considered a "long-shot candidate," according to a report in the Detroit News. The newspaper said GM's January offer was initially rejected but remains active as other potential buyers prepare to make proposals this week.

Steinbrenners pull out of bidding group

The Steinbrenner family and the real estate development company Tishman-Speyer have dropped out of Excelsior Racing Associates, one of the groups that is bidding on the franchise held by the New York Racing Association, a spokesman for the Steinbrenners and the company said Monday.

The announcement came three days after Jennifer Steinbrenner, the daughter of New York Yankees managing partner George Steinbrenner, filed for divorce from her husband, Steve Swindal, a member of the Excelsior partnership and a general partner of the Yankees. After the announcement of the divorce filing, Excelsior said that Swindal would remain a member of the partnership.

"The Steinbrenner family and all of their related entities have withdrawn from the Excelsior bid," Howard Rubenstein, the Steinbrenner spokesman, said in a statement.

Museum to focus on Canadian art

Museum London will be auctioning a number of its international pieces of art this year from its permanent collection and will begin focussing exclusively on Canadian art.

An endowment fund will be created with proceeds from the sales earmarked to purchase new art, including local work.

"This fund should permit the acquisition of the best works by London's finest artists for all Londoners to enjoy, something that has been difficult to achieve with existing funding sources," said museum board chairperson David Chapman.

The news follows a two-year assessment of the museum's permanent collection. That assessment determined that the museum should be collecting, exhibiting, conserving and researching only Canadian art in its collection, as outlined in its mandate.

Elementary school projected bumped back in Red LIon

The bidding process on a new elementary school in the Red Lion Area School District has been delayed from mid-May to early June, pushing the entire project back by months, project manager John Beddia told the school board Thursday.

The delay is due to work planned to the adjacent property. The district has a joint agreement with that developer because plans for the new school call for using the adjacent property for access, said board president Chris Seitz. The district cannot receive bids until the adjacent property receives its site approval.

With the delay of the bidding process, Seitz said it is "highly unlikely" that the new school will open in September 2009 as planned. The school was originally set to open in September 2008, but had to be pushed back because the acquisition of the property took longer than anticipated.
