| Signed Rangers Top Auction for Greyhound Rescue Charity
Greyhound Rescue Scotland was formed in 2001 and since that date the charity has been run by unpaid volunteers. As part of their fundraising they are auctioning a Rangers top from 2002/03 signed by the Rangers team that season. There is a link to the Ebay auction here. Iran Calls for Bids on Building Two Nuclear Power Plants
April 17 (Bloomberg) -- Iran is inviting bids to build two nuclear power plants in the Southern province of Bushehr, according an advertisement published today in English-language newspaper Iran Daily. Bidders can obtain the necessary documentation from April 25 upon payment of a 15,000-euro ($20,300) fee, the tender notice said. Offers to build the two reactors -- each with a capacity to generate between 1,000 and 1,600 megawatts of electricity -- must be submitted before Aug. 8, it added. Russia is building Iran's first nuclear plant, also in Bushehr, at a cost of at least $1 billion. Construction of the plant, which will generate about 1,000 megawatts, has faced numerous delays due to political disputes over Iran's atomic development program and over its promptness in making payments to contractors.
London midday: Boots auction gets market racing
LONDON (SHARECAST) - Footsie has powered forward as the battle for Alliance Boots has turned into a full-scale auction for the chemist chain between KKR and Stefano Pessina and private equity group Terra Firma. Earlier today Alliance Boots agreed a 10.6bn takeover offer from the pairing of private equity firm KKR and its own deputy chairman Stefano Pessina. The new offer is worth 10.90, but this has now been topped by Terra Firma, which has upped its offer from 1,085p to 1,126p cash. Housebuilder Taylor Woodrow is another good riser on a report that Persimmon is about to muscle into TayWood's merger plan with Wimpey. Barclays is going well. A report today suggested HSBC is interested in buying ABN Amro's Brazilian operation, which might improve Barclays' chances of success with its offer for the Dutch bank.
Hendrix, Bono, McCartney material raises money for lost instruments
A Jimi Hendrix guitar sold for $480,000 during a celebrity memorabilia auction designed, in part, to raise money to replace musical equipment lost to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The auction, which included material donated by The Edge, Bono, Paul McCartney and others smashed expectations and brought in total of $2.4 million US , officials said. "It was the best sale we've ever done,'' said Darren Julien, president and chief executive of Julien's Auctions, which ran the event benefiting Music Rising. Music Rising was co-founded by The Edge, the U2 guitarist who donated his favourite instrument, a 1975 Gibson Les Paul that he has played for years. The guitar had been expected to bring $60,000 to $80,000, but it went for $288,000, including the commission.
